Then you have to figure out how to get into the google's extensions settings to remove an option that is forcing you to use gmail. Only the Navigation and bookmarks settings are checked to show. There is no way to turn it off in Mozilla's main options and you have to go into add ons that you don't even know are on your browser to start with because by default they don't show up on the toolbar. Wwhich in turn, the toolbar has it defaulted to use google mail.
HOW TO SET DEFAULT MAIL CLIENT IN FIREFOX INSTALL
basically, if you do a normal install of automatically puts the google toolbar in your browser. NB : to make sure that Firefox is opening your 'mailto' links with your favorite webmail, go to 'Options -> General' panel, scroll to 'Applications' section, search for 'mailto' and choose the one you want. You should replace 'thunderbird' by the full path to the thunderbird executable if it is not in the PATH. You can now choose Firefox in the Windows 10 default email program preferences. Select 'Custom Mail Reader', and type 'thunderbird s' in the box. What a headache that was to resolve such a simple issue. Go to 'Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Advanced -> Preferred Applications'. Firefox should not be allowing google to have that checked by default when packaging it with thier software.

Once I went into the settings for the google toolbar I saw that by default it wants you to use gmail so I just unchecked it which fixed the problem. For anyone looking to use Gmail (inside of Firefox) as their default e-mail client, do this: 1) set your browser as the default application for e-mail 2) Go to Firefox's preferences, look for mailto to find the relevant Applications preferences, there, select Use Gmail in the dropdown list.

Click on Set this program as default to make it the default mail program. Click on the program you want to use as your email program, and its details are presented in the right. On the left will be a list of programs installed. The google toolbar is automatically downloaded during the install but does not show on my toolbar (it wasn't checked) only the navigation toolbar and the bookmarks toolbar were checked. In Windows 7’s Control Panel, go to Default Programs, and then Set Default Programs.
